By pakistan at 12 March, 2011, 1:11 am
TOKYO: More than 1,000 people were feared dead after a monster tsunami unleashed by a massive quake which wreaked destruction across northeast Japan and triggered an emergency at a nuclear power plant. Prime Minister Naoto Kan said Saturday that residents living within 10 kilometres (six miles) of the plant must evacuate amid fears of a slight radiation leak, before stepping onto a helicopter to head for the area. The atomic emergency came as the country struggled to assess the full extent of the devastation wrought by the massive tsunami triggered by the strongest quake ever recorded in Japan. The towering wall of water generated by the 8.9-magnitude earthquake — the seventh biggest in history — pulverised the northeastern city of Sendai, where police Friday reportedly said that 200-300 bodies had been found on the coast.

Inteview with Syed Wasif, a Professor of International Law from Washington Interview with professor of international law Syed Wasif in WashingtonThe non-Arab members of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) have to militarily intervene in Libya rather than NATO or the US forces, to avoid ‘animosity’ towards the West among Libyans. These are comments made by Professor of International Law Syed Wasif during an interview with Press TV when asked what he thought about Western countries’ intervention in Libya and the role of (OIC). The following is a rush transcription of the interview: Press TV: Which of the two scenarios you think is better? One, for the NATO or the US to intervene in the situation in Libya which there will be people dying or there will be bloodbath, or for Gaddafi to perhaps survive this and what he is going to do with people that have been opposing him even when he succeeds to survive this revolution? Wasif: Well, neither of the two. First of all, NATO or the United States do not have a legal base for unilateral intervention or imposing a no-fly zone over Libya

TRIPOLI: Forces loyal to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi entered the oil port of Ras Lanuf in tanks and boats overnight as they intensified their counter-attack into the insurgent heartland. Last month, I wrote an article for US publication Foreign Policy , arguing for the start of a peace process with militants in Fata and eastern Afghanistan and discussing the prospect of a referendum in the region to ask the population about their interest in a strict Islamist government. The plan also called for a hijrah (migration) of any hardline Islamists who yearn for strict Shariah and have romanticised notions of Taliban ‘justice’ to this semi-autonomous region and any moderates from those regions to choose to migrate to the mainland of either Afghanistan or Pakistan

NEW YORK: Mexican telecoms tycoon Carlos Slim Helu remained the world”s richest person, but Asia is where today”s big money is flowing, Forbes magazine said in its 2011 list of the world”s billionaires. Slim, who is almost unknown to the general public outside Mexico, weighed in at a staggering $74 billion of net wealth thanks to his telecoms empire. WASHINGTON: A Pakistani national has been arrested and charged with a scheme to illegally export nuclear-related materials to his home country from the United States, the US Justice Department said on Wednesday. Nadeem Akhtar, 45, who lives in Silver Spring, Maryland, a Washington suburb, was indicted for conspiring with others to illegally export restricted goods and technology to a Pakistani nuclear power plant and a Pakistani research commission. With an unidentified co-defendant, the alleged scheme began late in 2005 and lasted until March of last year, officials said. Most of the illegal exports took place between 2005 and 2008. “This arrest is the product of a vigorous, cooperative joint-agency investigation focused on denying and disrupting the illegal export of controlled nuclear technology destined for Pakistan,” said Eric Hirschhorn, the undersecretary of commerce for industry and security.

The people of Turkey regard the United States and Israel as their main enemies, the results of an opinion poll suggest.
