US to allies: ‘too much talk about leaving Afghanistan’
By pakistan at 11 March, 2011, 8:50 pm
Brussels: US Defence Secretary Robert Gates on Friday warned allies against an early withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan, saying it would jeopardise the war effort just as the Taliban has lost the upper hand. US-led forces have “dealt a heavy blow to the Taliban insurgency” in the past year and pushed the insurgents “out of vital areas in the south and east,” Gates said at a meeting of NATO defence ministers. But he said hard-won gains against the insurgency could unravel if countries begin pulling out large numbers of troops too quickly for what he called political reasons. Gates, in Brussels after touring Afghanistan this week, did not say which countries were weighing a troop drawdown but he referred to “rhetoric” in some European capitals that he said called into question the resolve displayed at a NATO summit in Lisbon in November. “Frankly, there is too much talk about leaving and not enough talk about getting the job done right

GENEVA: Thirty international search and rescue teams stand ready to go to Japan to provide assistance following a major earthquake, the United Nations said on Friday. “We stand ready to assist as usual in such cases,” Elisabeth Byrs of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Assistance (OCHA) told Reuters in Geneva. “Thirty international search and rescue teams are on alert and monitoring the situation and stand ready to assist if necessary.” UN disaster assessment and coordination teams, who deploy in emergencies worldwide to try to locate and treat survivors, normally include sniffer dogs and medical teams. The biggest earthquake to hit Japan in 140 years struck the northeast coast on Friday, triggering a 10-metre tsunami that swept away everything in its path, including houses, cars and farm buildings on fire. RAS JDIR: International officials Wednesday said they believed it was possible refugees fleeing Libya were being held back due to a sudden drop in the number trying to cross the border into Tunisia. “Around 3,000 people crossed the border on Tuesday, which is a relatively low figure,” compared with the 10,000 refugees that flooded across the border in previous days, said Monji Slim, head of the Red Crescent in Tunisia. “I believe that it is the policy of the Libyans in order to improve their image. “I have heard that satellite images taken by the Americans and the British show concentrations of people on the Libyan side of the border,” Slim added. UN High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres told reporters in Tunis he had “the same information but no proof” that they were being barred from crossing the border. Guterres, who with International Organization for Migration chief William Swing met with the Tunisian interim president and prime minister installed after the ouster of veteran ruler Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, said the United Nations desperately needed funds.

UN Special Rapporteur on Torture, Juan Mendez The United Nations has called on US President Barack Obama to take serious actions to investigate torture techniques used by the country’s previous administration during its so-called ‘war on terror.’ On Wednesday, the United Nation’s special rapporteur on torture, Juan Mendez said that Washington is primarily responsible for legal investigation and prosecution of abuse under its jurisdiction, AFP reported. “I will continue to insist that, even though some meritorious initiatives have been taken by President Obama to reverse some of the practices of the past, one thing that has not happened is a serious investigation of what took place during the so-called ‘war on terror’,” said Mendez. “I think I can join the many civil rights and civil society organizations in the United States that have been calling for that investigation to take place,” added the newly elected UN expert on torture. Back in 2009, when Obama took office he signed orders, making the operation of secret prisons for those captured during the wars on Afghanistan and Iraq illegal.

Iranian Parliament (Majlis) Speaker Ali Larijani Iranian Parliament (Majlis) Speaker Ali Larijani has warned embattled Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi against challenging the people, which Larijani likened to walking on a razor’s edge. “Efforts by the United States and the West to stop the regional revolutions are because of the growing potentials of Muslim nations to (become further) united– a unity which is based on Islam and the fight against the [world] arrogance and Zionism,” Majlis news agency (ICANA) quoted Larijani as saying on Wednesday. “This is the reason that the West tries to dissuade Muslim nations from helping each other by sowing discord between them,” he added
