Last month, I wrote an article for US publication Foreign Policy , arguing for the start of a peace process with militants in Fata and eastern Afghanistan and discussing the prospect of a referendum in the region to ask the population about their interest in a strict Islamist government. The plan also called for a hijrah (migration) of any hardline Islamists who yearn for strict Shariah and have romanticised notions of Taliban ‘justice’ to this semi-autonomous region and any moderates from those regions to choose to migrate to the mainland of either Afghanistan or Pakistan

There is a medieval legend about a sword so powerful that whoever wielded it could defeat entire armies single-handedly. The legend opens with a dead monarch in his chambers. Outside the window, the smouldering wreckage of the capital city is clearly visible; pillaged and burned beyond all recognition. The monarch’s slayer pries loose the all-powerful sword from his dead fingers and walks out of the room with it. Here is the paradox the legend poses: How could a sword that bestows so much power upon its wielder, be found in the hands of a monarch slain like a commoner? The answer is slowly revealed as the story unfolds.

TRIPOLI: Libyan strongman Moamer Kadhafi on Tuesday warned of dire consequences for North Africa and Europe if there was any Western interference in his country”s affairs, in a telephone conversation with the Greek prime minister. “Greece is a friend of Libya and can pass on this piece of advice to the European Union,” Jana news agency quoted Kadhafi as telling Prime Minister George Papandreou. Kadhafi, who took the initiative for the call, warned that “any violation of Libya”s security or stability would necessarily have dire consequences for the security in north Africa, the Mediterranean rim and Europe”, said Jana. His warning came as NATO and the European Union are to meet on the upheaval in the north African country and how to deal with Kadhafi on Thursday and Friday in Brussels. NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen has said that the North Atlantic alliance was considering all options but that NATO would not act without a UN mandate. “There is a consensus as to the need for NATO to intervene” with a no-fly zone, a top diplomat from the 28-nation alliance said earlier

By pakistan at 9 March, 2011, 3:38 am
LONDON: Any decision to impose a no-fly zone over battle-torn Libya should be taken by the United Nations and “not the United States”, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said. “I think it”s very important that it is not a US-led effort because this comes from the people of Libya themselves,” Clinton told Sky News on Tuesday. “We think it is important that the United Nations make that decision. “This doesn”t come from the outside. This doesn”t come from some Western power or some Gulf country saying: ”This is what you should do.”” The United States came in for severe international criticism when it invaded Iraq in 2003, an action which Kofi Annan, the then secretary general of the United Nations, said “was not in conformity with the UN Charter”.
